Dodgeball

You Vote!!

RE:Fuel kicksoff November 5th with an all out dodgeball tournament and we begin our first series on November 12th. You can now vote on the topic for the first 3!

Your vote matters. You don't need to be 18...shoot I hope you're a JHigh student or JHigh parent. But you have a say and your vote counts!

IT by Craig Groeschel

Began reading "IT" by Craig Goeschel and believe anybody who wants to understand more about "IT" in your ministry, I highly recommend this book. Many people can look at something and say "wow, they/he/she/ has IT" but what is "IT?" How do you get "IT?" How to keep "IT?" How can you make "IT" better?

InTents-FAQ's

Here are some “Frequently Asked Questions” about InTents at Second Baptist Church on October 11-12, 2008. 7:30PM – 10:30AM.

Do I have to pre-register?
No, but it is appreciated if you print off, fill out the pre-registration form; that is available online, and bring that to the fourth floor anytime or with your child when you arrive the night of.

Where do we go when we get there?
ALL JHigh Woodway students wanting to participate must meet and check in between the playground and the football field

What if I don’t have a tent?
Sorry we are unable to provide tents for everyone so we will need you to coordinate that with some other families. We request that each family be responsible for the setting up and tearing down of the tents at 7PM and 7AM respectively. Or maybe this would be a great time to purchase that needed family tent for the summer vacation…See Academy or Oshman’s for selections.

Are my kids going to be secure?
Yes! We will have a girls village and a guys village and they will not be allowed to enter the opposite village. We will also have our Student Ministry Staff and awesome adult leaders to provide the needed fun and safety for the students!

What if I don’t have the money?
If $25 is the biggest concern for not coming we ask that you come anyway. We ask that you pay what you can. It is our heart that money is never a reason for not being able to attend.

What happens during the evening?
We will spend the night outside "in tents", have a cook-out, a worship service, glow-in-the-dark games, a movie outside, s'mores and more. Then we'll wake up for breakfast and Bible Study on Sunday October 12th and attend the 9:30 service as a student ministry.

What happens in the morning?
In the morning if you can arrive between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM to assist your child in tearing down their tent, clean up and pack, we would greatly appreciate it. We cannot be responsible for the setting up and tearing down of that many tents.

What is my role as a parent?
What we ask you to do is come and help get the student situated and then give them a great big hug and say we will see you in the morning! In the morning it is very important that we get the tents taken down in a timely manner by 8AM and the fields/designated areas are left spotless. Thanks so much helping us.

IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GIVE US A CALL @713.365.2494
We look forward to seeing you there!

Hurricane IKE

The past week has been very interesting...weird...but a challenge that I'll never forget. IKE brought massive destruction to the Houston area and many people are still with out power, food, and water. The physical needs are plenty but so is the opportunity to SHINE and minister for Christ.

This weekend we will have our normal Bible studies and High Life for JHigh and I look forward to seeing students coming back to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ.

Amazing how we can take turning on a light switch for granted.

The Good Fight

We're starting a new series in Bible study this weekend. It comes from the XP3 series, The Good Fight. Take a look at what our students will be digging into over the next 3 weeks.

Week 1: The Good Fight series exposes the truth about family life: All families fight. We just fight about and for different things, and we fight in different ways. Some families are very vocal; others quietly stuff their frustrations inside. But regardless of how families fight, every family decides what they are going to fight over. Fighting about rules and issues will always drive us apart, but there is another way. What if we began to fight for relationship? What if our sole objective was to know each other and to honor each other? The Good Fight encourages students to stay in the fight and never give up on their relationship with their parents.

Week 2: When it comes to God’s intention for family, there are no ambiguities in Scripture. God desires for children and parents to turn their hearts toward each other and have a relationship. In order to have the good relationship God intends, we have to first learn how to change the fight. We have to stop fighting against “their way” and start fighting for a relationship. We have to surrender our right to be right and take up a new cause. We must prioritize relationship regardless of the cost.

Week 3: This week is the final conclusion to our parent series. The goal of this week is to help students see the responsibility that they have to pursue a relationship with their parents. Some students have been hurt by their parents and they are living out the cycle by seeking to hurt their parents in return. This week we will look at the life of Absalom, who having been hurt, used the remainder of his life for revenge. We will see the outcome of Absalom’s choice and raise the question: Is this really the best way? Can students begin to break the cycle by refusing to use their influence as sons and daughters to inflict pain on the parents who may have hurt them? Can they be the instruments of healing in our parent’s lives?

Justin Magers & John Miller prayer requests and update

John Miller
John's condition continues to improve, and efforts to move him from critical to stable condition are either in process or expected in the next 12-24 hours. The sedation medications which have helped John stay unconscious are being gradually decreased since about noon India time (about midnight Central time.) John has opened his left eye, squeezed a hand when asked to and is definitely responsive though sedated. Currently, they are keeping him alone and peaceful so as not to overexcite him and suffer a setback. By tomorrow (in the next 12 hours or so) they are hoping he can be awake. Because John is required to stay immobile for the next six weeks in his pelvic brace (a kind of four-point vise which keeps his pelvic bones aligned) doctors are planning to install a filter in a major vein to his lungs. Blood clots due to low movement will increase over time. The filter would catch any blood clots which would decrease his lung functions or cause pulmonary embolisms. The ventilator which breathes for John is on its lowest setting, and doctors believe he could breathe for himself NOW if it were removed. They plan to take him off the ventilator in the next 12-24 hours and expect him to be able to breathe without assistance. No additional surgeries are planned at this time. Bob and Diane Miller were delayed by flight connections and are expected to arrive in India early Thursday morning.

If you would like to donate to the Miller family, call John's uncle, Troy Wilson, at 479-633-3836 or 479-443-3352.

Justin Magers The earliest Justin is expected to be in Tulsa is now Thursday. This is still an unconfirmed target date. Many of his Indian friends have come by the hospital to give their condolences and grieve with the team. A memorial service for Justin will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 23rd at First Baptist Church of Tulsa, 403 S Cincinnati Ave, Tulsa, OK 74103. More information and an online tribute will be available at http://www.moorefuneral.com.

If you would like to donate to the Magers family, you can send money to the First Baptist Church of Tulsa. The address is: 403 S. Cinncinnati Ave, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74103.

The Hyderabad Team (the brothers team in India) The team is finishing their first dinner and meeting together since the accident while Delhi team members stay with John at the hospital. The team has been with John around the clock in groups. Many of John's and Justin's Indian friends have been to the hospital to grieve with the team for Justin and to check on John. Other Ways to Help The team and the organization have been asked many times how people might help. The prayers have been felt by the families and by the team. Although everyone is getting tired, please continue to pray for everyone - especially the families. Regarding financial assistance below are some of the ongoing and expected costs associated with our challenges. The appropriate organization to receive tax deductible donations would be: International Cultural Exchange, P.O. Box 1025, Conway, AR 72033. Some of the costs are being borne directly by the families, and some are being absorbed by ICE as they occur. Some costs are paid by ICE or the families initially but then will eventually be reimbursed by insurance. While specific designations can be made within reason, it is most helpful if funds given to ICE are general and unrestricted. Any gifts will be used on the other side of the ocean in India and won't apply to stateside efforts of other organizations. Here are some categories: The medical care for John Miller is being paid for as it is incurred by ICEThe Hyderabad team is setting up the Millers at a hotel for the next foreseeable future.Flights to Hyderabad by Delhi team members in support of the Hyderabad team have been made.Team and individual meals as our people work through the task lists.Flights to India from America by personnel in support of the Hyderabad and Delhi teams.

Justin Magers

Just received some unexpected news that a friend, fellow founding father of the BYX chapter at OSU, and a wonderful Christian man passed away in a motorcycle accident. Justin Magers was an incredible man who loved Christ and we can rejoice knowing that he's in Heaven with our Lord.

Here is the press release from India:
Approximately midnight Sunday Night two workers with Vishwas American Accent Training, Justin Magers of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and John Miller, of Cabot, Arkansas, were involved in a traffic accident in Hyderabad, India. Justin Magers died at the scene. John Miller is in critical condition in a hospital in Hyderabad. Both men worked as accent trainers for Indian businesses and call centers and were on a thirteen month assignment in India.

God bless you Justin. Was a pleasure serving with you, love you bro.

Crazy Love by Francis Chan

I just completed reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan tonight and I would suggest you pick it up. Francis pin-points what it truly looks like to live a radical life for Christ. It's with crazy love and a relentless pursuit of God.

Click the following link for an example that I blogged about while reading this book.

I got soul but I'm not a soldier...?

I want to pose this question to ALL followers of Christ. If you are truly following Him, are you a soldier in God's army? Many of us walk around saying "I got soul" aka "I'm a Christian" but in reality some if not most, aren't even soldiers; merely bench warmers.

Josh Price gets married

My boy Josh Price, recently married Deanna on 8/8/08 in Sarasota, Florida. I had the privilage of flying down this past Friday with Michael Head to see their wedding and enjoyed the short trip :). Josh is on our JHigh and High School staff as an Associate Pastor and also leads worship ministry for both.

Over the past 3 months Josh and I have spent a lot of time hanging out together and I'm so thankful I can call him a close friend. He loves the Lord, loves students, and is passionate about music in ministry. He's a phenomenal man and I'm looking forward for him and Deanna to return to Houston.
